The Ambassador

ambassadorDra. Mai Alkaila has been Ambassador of the State of Palestine in Italy and Permanent Representative to the United Nations FAO, IFAD and WFP since 2013.

Born in Palestine, graduated as Medical Doctor from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Granada, in Spain, specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology, obtained a Master Degree in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Public Health Management from the Faculty of Medicine – School of Public Health of the University of Chile.

Besides being a writer and a researcher, the Ambassador has twenty-six years of field experience in the development and management of Public Health Programmes related to comprehensive Primary Health Care, Reproductive Health, Adolescent Health, Emergency Care, Gender and Domestic Violence.

This entailed work with donors, NGO Agencies as well as governments at all levels in the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Malaysia, Nepal, Colombia, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Chile and, of course, the Occupied Territories of the West Bank and Gaza, focusing on the indigenous and refugee population.

Particularly as Director of the Family Health Programme of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), she represented the Agency and was responsible for Policy formulation, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Agency Maternal and Child Health, Family Planning and School Health Programmes, including Related Health Education and Counselling activities.

An activist for human rights, women’s rights and for the rights of the Palestinian people, before being appointed Ambassador in Italy, Mai Alkaila was selected to be the Ambassador of Palestine in Chile, where she held this position from 2006 to 2013.
